Three poetry chapbooks by Alta

Alta

First Edition. Very good.

Three chapbooks, mostly poetry with some prose, by Alta, the feminist poet, publisher, and founder of the pioneering Oakland- and Berkeley-based feminist press Shameless Hussy, which published many significant books of poetry by women, including Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow is Enuf. The present gathering of her own writing, characterized by a mixed tone of playful irreverence, incisive observation, and sensual lyricism, includes one early chapbook self-published by Shameless Hussy Press, as well as two more by allied small press ventures, spanning the most active years of Alta's writing and publishing. Individual chapbooks are: [1] Letters to Women. Berkeley: Shameless Hussy Press, n.d. [1969]. First Edition; [2] Poems and Prose. Pittsburgh: The KNOW Collective, n.d. [ca. 1970]. First Edition. Designated Vol. 1, No. 1 of an untitled series from the publisher. [3] Theme & Variations: Longpoem. Berkeley: Aldebaran Review / Shameless Hussy, 1975. First Edition. Constitutes Aldebaran Review 18 or 19 (front cover and title page give different numbers). Overall, a representative selection of titles which are scarce individually, and moreso together.
