Copyright 1840, front wrapper states date as 1841, title page states date as 1844. 16mo (6 5/8" x 4 3/8"); 32pp; printed yellow wrapper, front has decorative printer's ornament border around a vignette of a child carrying wood, a woman by the door of a cottage, "Price 10cts."; rear wrapper features a decorative border around a vignette of young children holding a banner for "Cold Water Army"; publisher's string binding; wood engraved illustrations throughout text; light hand wear to wrapper, light soiling and some spotting; very good plus. OCLC locates 3 copies with the copyright date of 1844.

A Temperance movement pamphlet aimed at educating children on the various types of alcohol, how it is sold, and the effects of drunkenness on society. In an orderly manner it presents short explanatory segments titled: Drunkeness, Distilling, Wine, Beer or Ale, Cider, the Wholesale Trade, the Retail Trade, and the Effects of Drunkenness. Small dramatic wood engravings accompany the text.

The author, Dr. Charles Jewett (1807-1879), was a prominent New England medical physician who was dedicated to the Temperance Movement, writing and lecturing widely on the subject to educate the public, including children, on the effects of alcohol in society.
