Bill for lodging woman accused of infanticide in Revolutionary War-era Massachusetts

Kenny, David

$375
  • Location: Stoughton, Massachusetts
  • Date: 1775
  • Seller SKU: 333

Manuscript bill documenting the lodging costs associated with keeping a woman accused of infanticide, dated June 13, 1775, in Stoughton, Massachusetts, "for boarding washing lodging & nursing Comfort Curtis a criminal charged with the murder of her bastard child in the night between 23 & 24th of May 1775". Written out and attested by David Kenny, 8" x 5", edges unevenly cut, with docketing to reverse.

While this bookseller has been unable to locate any other records related to this case, the Comfort Curtis accused here is likely the same born to John and Zipporah Curtis in Braintree in 1745. Similarly, there are minimal records of David Kenny, who likely matches the David Kenney of Stoughton who served with the Minuteman under Jonas Parker and then under future Governor John Brooks' 7th Regiment.

An unusual early Revolutionary War-era manuscript documenting an otherwise unknown charge of infanticide.
