This title was first published in London by L.H. Frowde in 1911. The author, Mary (May) Clarissa Gillington Byron (1861-1936) was a prolific writer of poetry, biographies, cookbooks, and books for children.

This story about a young girl named Lil and her Teddy Bear is told in numbered verse. Their adventures include a Golliwogg doll, a Black doll with wild hair, large white eyes, and bright red lips. The doll was popularized in Europe by the writings of the author, Florence Kate Upton, in The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls. The character was based on the Black minstrel doll owned by Upton in her youth. The Jim Crow Museum (Big Rapids, Michigan) classifies the character as a "caricature of a caricature."
