[EPHEMERA] [SIGNED] [ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION] [CHRISTMAS CARD]. (5 ¾" x 4"); [4]pp; glazed, cream-colored, stiff paper stock card featuring a U.S. Patriotic Shield on the front with a banner labeled "Byrd Antarctic Expedition" over a green planisphere representing the world; Patriotic Shield in blue and the card greeting in gold script on the opposing page; hand-signed in ink "G.L. Brown"; light small scratches to front shield else fine.

A scarce, official Byrd Antarctic Expedition Christmas card, the inscription reading "With Hearty Good Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Bright and Prosperous New Year From The Byrd Antarctic Expedition" "Christmas 1929" and signed "G.L. Brown" in ink.

Gustav L. Brown was a Brooklyn, N.Y. native who captained the supply ship "Eleanor Bolling," so named for the mother of explorer, Admiral Richard Byrd. The ship sailed for the Antarctic in late 1928 with a crew of 324 and a black-and-white cat named Eleanor; they successfully supplied Byrd's exploration. After returning, Brown joined the Baltimore Mail Line.
