New York, New York: Thomas Cook & Son, 1879. Good to very good. Light toning, a couple nicks/short tears, modern tape repairs.. Vol. 29, No. 10 of "Cook's Excusionist", a serial devoted to domestic and foreign travel edited by the "Tourists and Excursion Managers" Thomas Cook & Son of London and New York. The serial appears to be advertising heavily towards a newly wealthy American tourist market eager to explore the history of Europe and the Middle East, with destinations ranging from Holland and the Rhine to Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Turkey and Greece. Contains fascinating information about the kinds of travel and tourism available back in the day, including: lists of hotels with prices; sample tour itineraries, including steamboat and transatlantic trips; a tour to "Bible Lands" arranged specifically "for Youths and Students from 16 to 21 Years of Age"; and a host of adverts for everything from guide books and maps to sea sickness medication and rail tickets. A veritable treasure trove of information about how the West traveled and toured the world in the Victorian era, revealing their interests, opportunities, and means. Single vol. (14.5" by 9.5"), pp. 36, with wood engraved image of world travel at the head of the first leaf.
