1932 Chemawa Indian School basketball team, annotated by an Inuit student and player on the team. The photograph is accompanied by an apparently unrecorded printed booklet for the banquet given in honor of the school's basketball team from 1926. The photograph measures 9.5" x 7.5" and is mounted to 14" x 11.75" board, with the reverse heavily annotated by athlete Peter McClusky (or McCluskey), who is listed in school records as an Inuit student who graduated in 1932. The annotations list and identify all members of the team by name - which McClusky labels as "the Hot Shots '32" - and in addition provides the nicknames used by the team for the majority, such as Toots, Holiday, Big Stuff, giving his own nickname as Napoleon.
The booklet, "Basketball Banquet. Salem Indian School. Chemawa, Ore.--Mar. 17. 1926.", is an 8 page illustrated string-bound pamphlet in chipped maroon covers, which features a photograph and player list of the team, as well as the team's record and the menu for the banquet, and appears to be unrecorded. While photos of Native American school sports teams from this period are not uncommon, the present example is made exceptionally scarce by its indications of student athlete ownership, made all the more fascinating by its annotations.
