$800
  • Location: Philadelphia
  • Date: 1776
  • Seller SKU: 322

Interleaved partial copy of Poor Will's Pocket Almanack, for the Year 1777, printed portion incomplete, consisting 14 printed pages beginning in March, with 22 sheets interleaved and bound in at rear, one loose, consisting of 26 pages manuscript text.

A small, 4" x 2.5", Revolutionary War era pocket almanac with a wealth of manuscript additions on blank pages, ranging from lists of names, financial transactions, passages from the Bible, and incidents related to the ongoing American Revolution. While unidentified, the author uses a mixture of English and German, and mentions locations in the Berks County, Pennsylvania area. Of particular interest is the most detailed single passage:

Theese are to notify that on the 19th day of this Instant 7mber I was assaulted upon the highway passing through Pemington at and near Aexanders Tavern by Peter Kuhl, who accosted me with the name of a Dam'd Rebell

A fascinating piece of mixed printed and manuscript matter documenting the civilian experience in Pennsylvania during the American Revolution, with many further clues left to puzzle out.
