Diploma issued and signed by African American entrepreneuer Sara Spencer Washington for her Apex Beauty and Hairdressing school in Atlantic City in 1940. A large, visually compelling piece, measuring 17" x 14", the diploma is signed and made out by Washington to Etta Houston Kent for completion of the Apex College programs.

Sara Spencer Washington (1889-1953) was a highly successful businesswoman who founded the Apex News and Hairdressing Company, specializing in cosmetics and hair care products for African American women. Her businesses included a series of hairdressing and beauty schools and beauty product shops across the country, allowing her to become one of the first independent African American millionaires.
