Kyiv: Izdatel'stvo "Kul'tura" Gostresta "Kiev-Pechat", [1928]. Square quarto (17.3 × 17.3 cm). Original staple-stitched chromolithographed self-wrappers; 12 pp. Illustrations throughout. Professional restoration to spine and wrapper edges; still about very good.

A vibrant volume for children about a trip to the zoo, with illustrations by the Ukrainian painter and graphic artist Porfiry Zhalko-Tytarenko (1881-1949). Born in the Kharkiv region, Tytarenko went on to study painting at the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg (1902-1906) with another Ukrainian-born artist, the master painter Ilya Repin. After the Revolution, Tytarenko took part in the 1919 decoration of Kyiv for May Day holidays, later joining the Association of Artists of Red Ukraine, which formed in 1923-1926, taking part in their exhibitions. He would go on to teach art at various universities in Warsaw and Moscow in the 1910s-1930s, eventually coming to head the art department at the Kyiv National University of Civil Engineering and Architecture in 1944. In addition to illustrating several volumes of Leo Tolstoy's stories for children for the "Pechat" publishing house in Kyiv, Zhalko-Tytarenko also designed numerous film posters in the 1930s.
