Elector Certificate and Oath [caption title]

New Orleans: Peter O'Donnell, 1867. Good plus.. Broadsheet, approximately 11 x 9 inches. Previously folded. Some wear along old folds, pinhole-sized losses in right margin, not affecting text. A few nicks a very short tears at edges. Some soiling in upper right quadrant, otherwise light toning. An interesting broadsheet form used for certifying electors in Reconstruction-era Texas. The Register of Panola County, an M. St. Johns, certifies that Seaborn Jones, a resident of Carthage, Texas, is registered as a qualified elector for the county on August 9, 1867. On the verso, Jones has sworn a printed oath that he had, "Not been disenfranchised for participating in any rebellion or civil war against the United States, nor for felony committed against the laws of any of the United States." He goes on swear that he had never, "Held any Executive or judicial office in the United States, and afterwards engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, and given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof, and moreover had, "Never taken an oath...to support the Constitution of the United States, and afterwards engaged in insurrection and rebellion...." Nice evidence concerning the reinstatement of state and federal political processes after the demise of the Confederacy.
