Gdańsk: J. Rhode, 1596. CONTEMPORARY CALF STAMPED IN ZWISCHGOLD (oxidized, edges worn, two wormholes, front endleaves renewed), double-rule and laurel garland outer frame, triple-rule inner frame with fleurons in the corners, central knotwork ornament, H. BARTEL. SCHACHMAN gilt-lettered on the front panel, spine gilt with floral ornaments and red morocco title labels in English (spine decoration added later), edges painted blue and red to mark the parts.

First Edition. THIS COPY WAS BOUND FOR GDAŃSK MAYOR, ART PATRON, COLLECTOR AND ADVENTURER BARTHOLOMEUS VON SCHACHMAN (1559-1614).
Volckmar taught Polish at the Gdańsk Gymnasium and wrote this for his students. The longest of its three sections is a Latin-German-Polish lexicon, followed by THE FIRST ALPHABETICAL DICTIONARY WITH POLISH HEADWORDS and then an abbreviated German-Latin index. High German was the official language of Gdańsk, but Polish had been introduced into the schools in 1589.
This is the only edition printed in the author's lifetime (the 1594 edition is a ghost). No copies in North American libraries. In good condition (some light browning and occasional spots, minor soiling to top edge at ends), canceled early ownership inscriptions on the title, from the library of the Earls of Macclesfield (their blind stamps and North Library bookplate).
