CONTEMPORARY PARISIAN POLISHED CALF (old stains, corners worn, hinges cracked), blind-ruled outer border around inner border of three blind fillets with gilt foliate ornaments at the corners, at center a gilt-stamped crowned scepter between lions rampant combatant (owner's name or motto scraped from both boards), spine with six gilt flowers (base chipped).

Ad I: This schoolbook Epitome, adapted from Quintilian's ancient rhetorical manual, emphasizes rhetorical structure, presentation and style. It was edited by the humanist Johann Günther von Andernach (1505-74), who translated texts for Colines and later taught Vesalius. No copies of this edition recorded in the U.S. In good condition (minor marginal staining).

Ad II-IV: Three additional Colines imprints on Latinity and composition, comprising: the only Colines edition of the surviving fragments of Varro's On The Latin Language (II); the first edition of Neolatin poems praising Sigismondo Malatesta of Rimini and his mistress Isotta degli Atti (III); and the third Colines edition of Erasmus's abbreviation of his own letter-writing guide (IV). All are good copies (minor marginal staining, a few natural paper flaws, the last lightly browned), scattered underlining and marginal annotations throughout; from the library of T.K. Brooker.
