London: printed for the Company of Stationers,, [1785]. A record of longevity in the miniature book world" (Bondy) A charming miniature almanac for 1786, in the publisher's exquisite Venetian-style binding and slipcase, both with multicolour onlays. The famous London Almanack ran for centuries, showcasing along the way developments in decorative binding styles and the London landscape. This issue illustrates the Bank of England three years before John Soane began remaking the site. The contents provide a calendar and lists of reigns, London mayors and sheriffs, holidays, and current coins. The practical nature of the text stands in lovely contrast with the aesthetic beauty of the exterior. Miniature almanac (58 x 33 mm). With 4-page panoramic engraving of Bank of England, Threadneedle Street. Text engraved on steel. Duty stamp on title page, as issued. Original red morocco, covers onlaid with blue morocco background and yellow frames and columns, all with gilt floral tooling and enclosing oval red morocco centre, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Housed in publisher's similarly onlaid red morocco slipcase incorporating portraits on front and back. Early annotation correcting a date in November. Spine perished at lower section, binding holding, light wear to edges; slipcase slightly rubbed: a very good, bright example. Welsh 4576. Louis W. Bondy, Miniature Books: Their History from the Beginnings to the Present Day, 1981.
