30,000 BOOKS IN SHEETS AUCTIONED FOR READY MONEY. This catalog's three publishers' here offer their overstock - some one thousand late 18th- and early 19th-century titles in Dutch (c. 700) and French (c. 300). It includes some remarkably detailed information. For instance, THE ENTRIES FOR TWO MULTI-VOLUME COLLECTIONS OF PLAYS - the Zedelyk schouwtooneel and Gezellige Schouwburg - PROVIDE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SHEETS FOR BOTH REGULAR AND LARGE PAPER SETS AND THE NUMBER OF PLATES IN DIFFERING STATES. The final page lists multiple lots of engraving, printing, writing and decorated paper. The fourteen terms of sale detail the auctioneer's guarantee, the booksellers' collation responsibilities and the arrangement of advance payment, application for credit and the currency of settlement.
This copy most likely belonged to Amsterdam publisher Cornelis Ludovicus Schleyer (1780-1859), who signed the title (de Heer Schleyer) and marked nine pages in ink and seven pages in pencil. His manuscript notes suggest he shared larger lots with the publishers and booksellers Egmont, Hey and Timmer. In good condition (inner marginal stain).
