[New York, New York]: J.S. Adams, Commissioner of Immigration, 1870. Good. Light dust soiling, wrps chipped with larger short tear to foot of spine.. A brief treatise published in 1870 to promote Florida to immigrants, farmers, and other groups seeking a new home. Published for the state by J.S. Adams, Commissioner of Immigration, to promote it as having a "genial climate, variety of productions" and a "sparseness of settlement" attractive to people seeking new homes from the North who do not want to weather the dangerous journey West. Includes a frontispiece, folding map, and several in-text illustrations to accompany the text. Subjects covered include: history of the state; population; geography; "social condition" (i.e. "newly settled"); politics; climate (including rain and temperature charts); soil; communication; natural resources for fertilizers; productions (e,g, sugar, fruits, cotton); stock raising; lumber; game and fish; naval stores; routes and expense; land prices; buildings; and labor. An interesting look into the state's desire to attract residents in this period of its history. Single vol. (9" by 5.75"), pp. 69, [3], in-text illus., frontis., folding map, in original printed light orange wrps.
