$950
  • Seller SKU: 53466
Approximately 591 pp. volume representing the first edition of the classic work of "ero-guro-nansensu" (erotic grotesque nonsense), pages text only. Octavo (7 3/8 x 5 inches). Original publisher's illustrated cloth printed in red, black, and yellow, with printed card slipcase. Considerable staining and edgewear to slipcase, light smudging to covers of book, some light browning, handling wear, overall very good. Tokyo: Kaichosha, June 1930 (Showa 5). "Ero-guro-nansensu" is a Japanese 'wasei-eigo' expression taken from the English words erotic, grotesque, and nonsense. It refers to a specific set of cultural trends that arose in Japan during the Showa era, with a large increase in the release of literature, magazines, news articles, and music centered around the erotic grotesque.

This work, while also titled in English "Selection of Abnormal Documents", could also be translated as "A Prescription for Perverts". The book touches on topics such as drugs, punishment, cannibalism, sex toys, and everyday objects used for female masturbation. According to Hakkin Hon: Bessatsu Taiyo, this work was banned four days before its publication, and 295 of the 1000 total copies produced were seized. A number of printings appeared, most with at least a quarter of the text blanked out. The cover illustration is abstract in nature, colorful, and almost playful, and divulges nothing of what the pages inside contain.

A very scarce work; as of June 2026, OCLC does not locate a single holding of this book outside of Japan.
