[Mexico, 1779. About very good.. Engraved broadside, approximately 12x8 inches. Previously folded. Trimmed close at left edge, entering plate area; three small wormholes in blank area at left. An entirely engraved and apparently unrecorded indulgence for donations to the building of an important, and still extant, chapel in Mexico City during the late 1770s. The chief feature of the work is a well-executed architectural illustration, with scale, that depicts the planned construction of the Chapel of Our Lady of Guadalupe, called El Pocito. Architectural details are identified with letters, explained in keys at the sides. Two notices are printed in the midst of the plan. The first one offers forty days of indulgence for supporting the construction of the chapel, granted by Fray Antonio de Jesus Sanchez, bishop of Linares. The second, from the bishop of Mexico City, offers eighty days of indulgence to those people that personally help to build the chapel. At the foot of the plan is a third note, concerning the discovery of the stone necessary for the construction of the chapel, made by an Indian named Mariano Guadalupe in February 1779.

The Capilla del Pócito is a significant piece of architecture in Mexico City, located within the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and is one of the most unique works of the Mexican Baroque style. The chapel was built between 1777 and 1791 by architect Francisco Antonio Guerrero y Torres, a prominent exponent of baroque architecture. It was constructed on the site where, according to tradition, a miraculous spring emerged after the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe to Juan Diego in 1531. Over the centuries, people believed the water had healing properties, attracting numerous pilgrims. Not in OCLC.
