[CHAPBOOK] [JUVENILE]. 48mo (3 ¾" x 2 ½"); [4], 5-18, [2]pp; wrapper with a small vignette of an elephant on the front and rear; pictorial title page; publisher's string binding; wood engraved illustrations; alphabet; lightly age-toned; near fine. OCLC lists this title with two publishing dates of 1844 and 1846; held only by AAS, but their copy lacks a publishing date.

A wonderful little chapbook featuring 14 animal engravings with short descriptions: Squirrel, Hare, Dog, Racoon [sic], Fox, Wolf, Kanguroo [sic], Reindeer, Goat, Elk, Antelope, Zebra, Jaugar [sic], and Sheep.

The country of "New Holland" is mentioned in the description of the "Kanguroo," the name for Australia, into the 1820s.

Ansel Phelps (1789-1868) published in Greenfield, Massachusetts, between 1823 and 1848. The 1844 publication of this title features a bird on the front wrapper.
