Side View, Montgomery County, Ky, 1888. Very good.. Two manuscript letters: [1]; [2]pp., each on "Thomas Corwin Anderson High Class Short-Horns and Oxford Down Sheep" letterhead. Original mailing folds, minor wear. A pair of letters pertaining to Thomas Corwin Anderson's cattle and sheep ranching business in late-19th century Kentucky. The first letter was written by Anderson to D.J. Spriggs on March 29, 1886. Anderson writes to Spriggs that he no longer issues regular catalogues because of the large size of his herd. He also invites Spriggs to view his current herd, comprised of "some extra fine bulls of the highest breeding in this country or England from 2 years of age to a day old." The second letter is a January 1888 agreement between Anderson and a Montgomery County farmer regarding the specifics of Anderson's rental of some farm land. The latter part of the agreement details the condition of the farm expected by Anderson, including fencing and clearing, presumably for the grazing of his herd. A rare peek into the 19th-century cattle & sheep industry in Kentucky.
