Includes Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, King Lear, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello, Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet, King John, The Merchent of Venice, Macbeth,King Henry the Fifth, and others as well as Shakespeare's poetry, including his Sonnets. Brown pebbled leather boards. Covers handsomely embossed with portrait of Shakespeare in gilt. Raised bands on spine, with gilt embossed lettering and star design. All edges gilt. Beautifully detailed, intricate frontispiece and elaborately illustrated title page. Gorgeous steel engravings throughout portraying celebrated contemporary actors in character and costume as well as miniature scenes from the play. Complete with tissue guards. Title in Full: The Complete works of Shakespeare, From the Original Text: Carefully Collated and Compared with the Editions of Halliwell, Knight, and Collier: With Historical and Critical Introductions, and Notes to Each Play; and A Life of the Great Dramatist, by Charles Knight. Illustrated with New and Finely Executed Steel Engravings, Chiefly Portraits in Character of Celebrated American Actors, Drawn From Life, Expressly for this Edition. All three in very good condition, with tight, firm textblocks, strong spines, and remarkably clean pages that show only mild age-related toning and very occasional light foxing. Leather covers very good but discolored at the joint and some shelfwear. Tragedies volume shows 4" inch crack to front joint but still holding. A beautiful, complete set of this three volume work.
