New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1946. First edition, second printing only one month after the first. Illustrated throughout by George Gray. 8vo, publisher's original navy blue cloth, lettered on the spine in black and pictorially decorated in black on the upper cover, map endpapers showing the extensive travels of Sinbad while serving as a mascot for the United States Coast Guard. In the original pictorially decorated dustjacket. ix, 157pp. A fine copy only lightly mellowed by age and not badly so for a book produced to wartime standards. The jacket is bright and attractive with a little expected edge wear and with some fading to the orange portion of the spine and tidy reinforcement from the rear. THE TRUE STORY OF SINBAD, FAMOUS CANINE MASCOT OF THE USCG CUTTER CAMPBELL. Sinbad's exploits in his eight years at sea, both in peacetime and in war made him a real-life hero to American fighting men. Appropriately, his story is told by a fellow member of the Coast Guard and brought to life with pictures drawn by an official Coast Guard artist.
"Every Coast Guard officer and man knows and admires Sinbad, the mascott of the USS George W. Campbell. His exploits are now Coast Guard legends, which are retold so well in this volume. Like all mascots, Sinbad has helped to lighten the strain of life at sea. But his story is important, not only for the happiness he has brought to the men who have sailed with him. It also gives a picture of the adventurous life on a cutter from the peacetime patrols to the days when the Battle of the Atlantic was at its highest peak." - Admiral Waesche.
