1908. Panoramic Yardlong Photograph West Union, Iowa, 1908

Photograph measures 10 x 47 1/4 inches and has been well loved. Several pinholes along top edge, tape remnants on end of verso. 1 1/4 x 8-inch piece missing. A couple creases. Fair condition.

Despite flaws, this yardlong photo of West Union, Iowa is pretty special--that moment in time when the photographer came up from Des Moines (188 miles) and invited townspeople to pose at the center of town.

West Union is the county seat of Fayette County with the courthouse in the center of the photo, although mostly obscured by trees. A good hand lens would bring out a number of signs on businesses. Several automobiles and numerous horsedrawn buggies shown along with at least 50 men, women and children.

F.J. Bandholts operated a Des Moines photo studio from 1899 to 1911. Bandholts would barnstorm small Iowa towns taking portraits and usually a town panorama photo. The Library of Congress holds a collection of 159 Bandholts yardlongs including this West Union photo.
