[Saxony], 1751. Recent half-vellum over black pastepaper boards, gilt spine label, edges sprinkled red.

UNPUBLISHED, COMPREHENSIVE AND SYSTEMATIC, this field manual is practical, above all. It codifies war cries, offensive and defensive strategies and tactics, work chants, hundreds of commands for musketeers, grenadiers and standard bearers, arms, munitions, the duties of all officer ranks, troop maneuvers and discipline. Key elements appear in red for quick reference. It rests on the author’s quarter-century of high command in Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, Italy, Prussia and Saxony and his half-dozen years as Field Marshal of the Saxon Army. He served under both his father August the Strong (1725-33) and his half-brother Friedrich August II (1733-63). Rutowski’s printed works survive in single copies (two octavos and a handful of broadsides and bifolia, all at Dresden). If they were prepared, the three “plans” mentioned in the text were apparently never bound in. Pale stains, scattered soiling, somewhat later signature of Kazimier ?Repietowcki.
