Preceded by two early binder's blanks (outer edge fraying, browned and brittle): blank fol. 1 (recto and verso) has pencil annotations for an index to the 1681 edition of Rochefort's "Histoire naturelle et morale des iles Antilles de l'Amerique" (likewise published by Leers), as does the final unnumbered page [44]. Recent neat quarter morocco over marbled boards (unobtrusive stain on front board). Front flyleaf inscribed in ink by former owner John Poindexter Landers. First edition of the important Supplement to Rochefort's "Histoire naturelle et morale des iles Antilles de l'Amerique" from which it was also sold separately (Alden-Landis). It contains essential practical information for potential emigrants to Virginia, Pennsylvania, the Carolinas, Maryland, New York, and elsewhere in New England, with descriptions of the towns of the colonists, their governments and their faiths, indigenous peoples, flora, fauna, and terrain, much of which is printed here for the first time. Indeed, the present volume contains one of the earliest printed descriptions about Pennsylvania. Even Harvard College is named described (p. 35). Potential emigrants are advised to leave from London "with the grace of God" (p. 42).
